Sotheby’s recently sold one of the most exquisite carpets for $5,458,500 in Doha on March 19. As the catalog note says: “The Pearl Carpet of Baroda is an extraordinary work of art that is a true testament to the wealth, sophistication, and grandeur of the legendary courts of the maharajas as well as an extant example of the fabled riches of India.”

There was a carpet from rubber soles stitched together, a puff from assembled trainers, a coffee table supported by old catalogs, a wall build from old brochures, a lamp from plastic straps, and some accessories from recovered fabrics.

Even if the products are somewhat conceptual, they look great and are inspirational for thinking about new ways of reusing these materials.

Creative “Temporary Contemporary” Carpets

These “temporary contemporary” rugs, however, are all made by one Dutch design group, conveniently called WE MAKE CARPETS. Marcia Nolte, Stijn van der Vleuten and Bob Waardenburg “mix traditional skills and a critical view of the consumer society in unusual carpets”. And they do this with common household objects (like pasta, paperclips, clothespins and coffee) and upload the (fantastic) results to WordPress (Jeremyriad’s blog platform of choice).
